I started off at the Healthy Aging Symposium with some coffee and pastries. I didn’t attend to conference and presentations, but stayed outside in the courtyard and mingled. I also brought the song book that HAP choir group uses at Seasons at La Jolla, and propped it in front of the board. I hope people noticed it and knew the song that was presented.
I was very surprised that there were so many people. This shows that there a good part of the population is interested or concerned about aging. A woman spoke to me about the NAP on La Jolla that Stephanie and I worked on, she said that this type of research is important and that people in the community should know about it. In between conferences, the attendees looked at our presentation boards and were actually very interested in them. Some asked questions, took pictures, or wanted a paper size version to be able to take home. We are also thinking about donating the HAP poster boards to the place we did the HAP on. I also invited my friends to the symposium. Although I baited them with free lunch, they enjoyed looking at my poster. This was the last time this LCS class will be together, and it was fun to just hangout. I think this is the type of social interaction we should have now and then.
My HAP group, John, Micah, Stephanie, and I, had a choir group with the patients at Seasons at La Jolla. I really enjoyed singing with them and it was fun to learn some new songs that are not from my time. We have 25 songs that we chose ourselves, got from another intergenerational choir group, and from the man that performs there. We had a few concerns in the beginning, such as location and how to lead a choir group. Some lessons learned is that things don’t always go as planned and that’s okay. It is to be flexible and work with what you have, then grow from there. We were expecting to teach the patients songs, but from the first session, we decided on them just enjoying our singing and some also sang with us. From there, we created the song books, with lyrics for them to be able to sing with us. A few of them just liked to read the lyrics of the whole song book. We added more songs each time we went to a session, we started off with 8 songs and now there are 25. Also, just have fun with it and work on a HAP that you would enjoy.
LCS is a really great program. I did gain some new experiences and became more passionate in working with seniors. I also made some new friends, which you don’t expect to do in college classes anymore.
Jessica signing off, bye!
