These past few weeks have been really busy with a lot to plan for, so I’d like to break it down for you.
First off, I finally presented my Oral History Project to the class and I was really happy that day. I heard some really interesting stories of older adults from my classmates and saw what art pieces they made for their Extraordinary Persons (EPs). It was incredible to see and hear and I would like to say that this project is one of those experiences in life where people say that the journey is worth more than the destination. Thanks to this project, I got to know a lot of things I wouldn’t normally ask my grandpa. I can’t say we’ve grown that much closer, but I do understand his stance on a couple of issues now that I have listened to his life story and I have grown to respect him more as a person, a dad, and a grandfather. Presenting his life story was nerve-wracking because I know for sure that I am not able to do his story any justice. However, I am glad that I did it because his rags to riches story deserves to be heard and I cannot be prouder to call him my grandpa.
The next item on this list is my favorite part activity during class time, reading discussions. I do acknowledge that sometimes, I skim over the readings so quickly that I forget what I have read by the next day, so these discussions are really interesting for me. I love that I get to hear what my classmates think about the readings and discuss the discussion questions. I don’t know what it is about my questions but I’ve been getting philosophical questions. For example, “where would you find happiness, in the next big thing or in salience?” or “When do we stop wanting to grow up?” or “When does our view of growing up shift?” All of these questions really do prompt me to think deeply about what I want for my future and what goals or plans I have to set up in order to reach that destination.
Last but not least, the Love, Care, Connect activity at the West Senior Wellness Center. It was a cloudy day outside and we were setting up for the event. I was not fully conscious during the first hour or two, but I loved the event that was going on. The art station that we put up was quite empty, but I had a lot of fun making origami hearts and painting. The food that my classmates prepared was absolutely delicious and the boutique was swarming with people. I loved all the events happening and I got to be there to experience it. All in all, quite the interesting 3 weeks for me.
