Last week on Friday, May 14, 2021, my group and I had our Healthy Aging Project (HAP). For our project, we had an intergeneration talk with older folxs about relationships. The HAP we did was changed from our original idea. At first, we were going to do a dating circle for older folxs across San Diego County to meet each other. Then, the project transformed into a meeting place for older folxs to meet each other and create connections. Finally, our project turned into the current project of having an intergeneration talk about relationships. We structured the program in talking about five different levels of relationships. Each one of the group members led the discussion on each level. The levels got deeper in conversation and reflection and the levels follows respectively: hobbies, community, family (including chosen family), significant other relationships, and self. I was responsible for the significant other relationships. This changed drastically each time we met up and saw the number of sign-ups.
A half-hour before the program, my group and I met before to do a run through. As it the time for our event came closer and closer, I became even more anxious. I did not know how many people would be coming to our event, but I knew we had two sign-ups. When it reached four o’clock, we had one person in the waiting room. It was go time! Sadly, that person was the only person we talked to for the night, but we had a great time talking to him. It was actually someone we had talked to earlier during the Group HAP. We learned about his love of musicals. He even was the crocodile for a production of Peter Pan. I guessed that was one of the lost boys. When it came my turn to facilitate my section, the significant others part, the person gave really advice of loving one’s self until loving someone else. It was a great night to learn from others and learn about my fellow scholars and from the older folk. This upcoming week we are presenting our Age-Friendly Neighborhood Assessment, and I can’t wait to fill in. Until next week…
