This week was an emotional one for me because it was my last week of classes. Four years went by so fast and I can’t believe I am graduating in a few days. I am really grateful that I could learn so much during my time here. LCS is definitely one of my favorite classes that I have taken here at UCSD and I will never forget the wonderful people I met through this program. This class has had such a big impact on me as it opened my eyes to so many things. Before taking this class, I did not really get the opportunity to interact with people, especially seniors, from so many different backgrounds. Every conversation that I have had with seniors from various communities has been so genuine and meaningful. Now I feel more connected to people and places in San Diego.
I also really appreciate the small classroom environment that LCS provides. I was never the kind of person who would speak up in class but being surrounded by such supportive and encouraging classmates, really made me comfortable to take initiative and participate in class. In this sense, LCS has made me more confident as a person. Every discussion we had in class was so insightful and I loved hearing my classmates’ thoughts on different topics. I feel like I’ve learned so much from everyone and their thoughts and experiences helped enrich my own perspective on things.
One of my favorite projects we did in this class was the Gateway Growing HAP. I really enjoyed working with Shivani, Leena, Wayne and Chloe. The two events we set up as part of our HAP were such rewarding experiences. All the seniors who attended our events were so happy to interact with us and make succulent jars. It makes me happy to think that we were able to make a small difference in their lives. It was also wonderful to see our poster on display at the Healthy Aging Symposium. I enjoyed talking to people about the work we did and also about LCS in general. So many people appreciated the goals our program and were interested in learning more about it.
I would like to thank Professor Bussell and Professor Lewis for founding this program and giving us the opportunity to bond with so many wonderful people, do interesting projects and learn so much about the process of aging and different issues that affect seniors. This class was one of my favorite and I am really going to miss it.
