Valentine's Day Care Packages

On Sunday, January 31st, 2021 at 10am, Professors Leslie Lewis and Mirle Rabinowitz-Bussell arrived to the UC San Diego campus at Warren Mall to set up stations where everyone could walk through to fill up the 500 bags (!!!). Luckily we had the combined labor of those of us in the Life Course Scholars program that could come out, plus 12-13 other students from the professors' homelessness class. Each bag came with a card, a letter (printed on nice paper, rolled up and tied with a ribbon), friendship bracelet, hand sanitizer, Hershey's kisses and chocolate bar, and tangerine. The card had our (serious) class photo on the front, and on the inside, our silly photo + this text:
Dear Neighbor and Fellow San Diegan,
We are a small group of UC San Diego students in the Life Course Scholars Program. We are learning about the diversity of the aging experience and of older adults, and about how all of our lives are shaped by our families, neighborhoods, individual gifts, circumstances, and by the broader, societal policies and environments that surround us. We were curious about housing options for older adults in San Diego, so our professors arranged for us to take a virtual tour of your building recently. While hearing about its history, and seeing photos, we wondered about the lives, loves, losses, dreams, adventures, personalities, and wisdom of the people living there. So, we are reaching out in the hopes that you might like to be in touch. We've certainly been hungry to connect with other human beings over the past crazy pandemic year. We are including some information about each of us, including our two professors, along with some chocolate, because we all need a little sweetness in our lives. If you think you might like to be in touch with us (by letter, email, text, phone, or a conversation over Zoom), please respond to either of the course instructors: Dr. Leslie Lewis ([email protected]) or Dr. Mirle Rabinowitz-Bussell ([email protected])!
Happy Valentine's Day from all of us!
