On February 5, 2020 the Life Course Scholars Program went to Bayside Community Center for some intergenerational zumba. The instructor asked all of us to wear red to celebrate Valentine's day early. I had a blast! It was my first time doing Zumba. I had a hard time keeping up because I could not really see the instructor but also because I was tired and not wearing the best attire for exercising. However, the space was really friendly and judgement free so I felt comfortable regardless of my skill level. This was honestly the most exercise I've done in months, so I'm very glad we got this opportunity.
One thing that was very evident while I was in the space was the sense of community. A lot of the older individuals greeted each other warmly and with hugs and kisses. It warmed my heart! I also noticed that the front desk was selling these beautiful handmade earring sets for $5. A person working at the Bayside Community Center told us that a resident made them all by herself. I like the clear support they have for their residents and their hobbies!
After Zumba we took lots of photos and the instructor passed out bubble wands and solution! Many of the older adults stayed back for us to socialize with them. I talked to an asian eighty-one year old named Zenny. Zenny has a granddaughter who studies math and computer science at UCSD and has been to many different countries. Despite her age, she continues to travel with her husband Francisco. I hope to be able to do the same when I am her age!
