We started off the class with creating a post-survey for the HAPs. We want to know the effect our projects our having and if it actually helps the seniors. With all of the questions that each group came up with on the board, there was some overlap. It seems that my fellow LCSers have similar goals for their HAPs since the questions are also similar. We all want to better their mental and emotional health in some way. This survey will be given after the last session or after the event. My group also might want to do a presurvey or maybe just talk to the patients and staff.
We then did the reading discussions. Rhiannon, Elizabeth, and Jackie presented today. I enjoyed the passages. It was more like the people were telling me their actual life stories and experiences rather than me reading and absorbing information. Like Rhiannon, a few of these stories resonated with me and I could relate to them in some way.
We also got a new assignment that the LCS program has not done before and it is probably the longest name an assignment has ever gotten, “Debunking Ageist Stereotypes and/or Bridging Gaps of Understanding about the Aging Population.” For this we watched a video to give us an idea on how do the project. In our small groups we thought of stereotypes or misconceptions we have on seniors and a possible platform to do the project. There was also a lot of overlap, so we all generally know these stereotypes. I think the ones that I thought of was probably from what I watched on TV. There were also a lot of good ideas on how to debunk these stereotypes, such as blogging, animations, and short documentaries. At the end of class, Stephanie and I were thinking of doing the project together with our HAP group since we’ll be meeting a lot and she also liked one of my ideas for the project. This project seems like a lot of fun since we will probably hangout with seniors more and others will be able to see how enjoyable it is to do so.
