During class one day, we discussed whether we valued Fred’s practice of gratitude or Ping’s practice of acceptance more. Many people know that practicing gratitude each day can promote positivity in one’s life. On the other hand, people often think that accepting certain life events is a sign of weakness. I think acceptance is actually a sign of mental strength because after accepting the situation where one is in the present moment, the individual can more easily move on with life and “do the next right thing” (reference from Frozen II).
For the progress on the HAP, I was able to complete my three interviews with three different elderly for the video project. The conversations have been really fun and engaging. I was surprised to be able to relate to Cat D’s life in different ways. She was also really kind and cool because she wore a pink hoodie with a cat during the interview.
For the Debunking Ageist Myths assignment, I chose to focus on the myth that “aging adults are sad.” In my research, I found many papers from the early 2000s to this year confirming that, despite their higher chances of becoming depressed and suffering from comorbid illnesses, older adults actually displayed better emotional wellbeing in comparison to young adults. I also remembered Applewhite mentioning the U-shaped happiness curve, which brought me to discover a recent 2020 research paper evaluating happiness of different ages around the world, confirming that this model is generally true around the world.
