Ageism Myths Podcast
Gema Lopez and Jimena Salazar created a podcast around research they did on ageist myths. They covered two ageist myths, first, that genes determine your health as you age or if aging means you will become inactive, and second, that aging means your ability to learn stops. They start some great conversations!
Infectious Disease and Older Adults
Tiffany Nakajima did a small sample literature review on infectious disease and older adults. This is a very important topic as infectious disease accounts for 1/3 of deaths in people aged 65 and older. She used PubMed for her research and found that there weren't many articles on infectious disease and the elderly. She had some wonderful findings and conclusions!
Kiwanis Family Fireside Chats
Miyu Nakajima has been a part of the Kiwanis Family for quite some time. Now, she is trying to encourage intergenerational connections, between the older members and the younger members of the group. She plans to do this by recording her interviews with the older members and uploading them to a spotify page (called The SunnyCast) for the younger members to listen to. The topics on the interview range from advice for the younger members to some of their greatest accomplishments.
Diving into community stories
Mariyah Shad, Jasmine Mounphoxay, Shina Luu, and Anthony Romero worked together to create this beautiful masterpiece. They each asked a few of their friends to have a conversation with an older adult in their life. They had conversations about childbirth, immigration experience, family and childhood, and many more. They then asked their friend and the older adult they interviewed to write a reflection about what they learned from one another or what they took away from the conversation. They recorded many beautiful reflections!
Age-Friendly Assessment of Fair Housing
Kortni Washington did a much- needed research project on whether there is Fair Housing for older adults based on safety, affordability, and accessibility throughout San Diego. She researched current access for marginalized communities, such as: racial minorities, people with low income, people with disabilities, non-citizens/limited rights citizens, and non-English speakers. She concludes with ways to improve our community and provide affordable, accessible, and safe housing for marginalized communities.
