Coming into this program, I had no idea that LCS would have such a huge impact on me. I don’t usually have the opportunity to speak to seniors other than my grandparents often, so LCS was a whole new experience. From touring affordable housing complexes to planning up a whole spa/wellness event for seniors, every site visit got me thinking and reflecting on life more than any other of my classes. These two quarters opened my eyes to the different realities that exist out there. It was one thing to read about poverty and health disparities, but to witness it in person and talk to the people who are living through these situations was such an invaluable experience. I loved that I could share these experiences with my passionate classmates who care about the same issues. I had the chance to work with many of my classmates on different projects, and I always learned something new from everyone’s thoughts and suggestions.
This program is really what you put into it, so I hope y’all future LCS’ers will put yourself out there and make the best out of what this class and the professors offer! LCS became one of my favorite experiences in my 4 years here at UCSD. Before this program, I wasn’t sure which population I wanted to work with in public health. Now, I’m very convinced that I want to focus on working with underserved seniors in any big or small way. The lessons I learned through speaking with the seniors are priceless and I’ll take them with me as I start my post-grad career. After my last visit to the West Center for my HAP event, I actually felt so sad that I will be leaving San Diego and all the relationships I built with some of the seniors these 2 quarters.
Thank you to Prof. Lewis & Prof. Bussell for creating such a wonderful program and supporting each one of us throughout this journey! I’m so, so grateful that I had to the chance to experience this.
