The LGBT Community Center was beautiful, it looked like an art piece and had some historical meaning. The room that we worked in was some type of auditorium and probably a lot of events are held there. There were a lot of seniors compared to the other places that we visited, I was a little overwhelmed. I am a pretty shy person, but I can become talkative if I have to. However, I wasn’t nervous when interacting with the seniors here. The people here are very welcoming and friendly. We, the students, were asked to spread out and sit at the tables with no students. When I was getting up to do just that, one of the seniors named John stopped me and wanted me to stay at his table. We probably talked for less than 5 minutes and we were already forming this relationship. I also spoke to a woman named Patricia for most of my time at the community center. I feel like they love talking about their families and friends. During the LEG session, although we touched on the topics about an ideal, all age inclusive community, Pat mostly shared her own experiences and what she does with her family and friends. Pat also told me that one of her good friends that attends the community center’s events with her, was sent to the emergency room. They were supposed to go to the LEG together, but she fell in her room. Pat will be taking care of her house while she is in the hospital. There is such a great sense of community and such great friendships here. There are also affordable housing units that surround the community center, which Pat and her friend, live.
They also fed the seniors and us, with food from Buca di Beppo. I love Italian food, and so did John. I think sharing a meal with them helped them open up and they were able to talk about themselves more. They were very outspoken during the LEG and had some good ideas. They really appreciated us coming here and listening to their ideas on how to improve their community.
