For this class, it was just Professor Leslie Lewis. We quickly went over the what we will be doing for our first LEG at Casa de Manana Retirement Community. We had a little dry run with our NAP groups and the community that we did it on, on what to say for each of the San Diego communities. When we practiced it, it had a lot of good information but we had to condense it.
Then, people presented their chapter for the reading discussion. There was a lot more discussion in this one, probably because we finally got the book and read the passages. A lot of good points were made and we made connections of our own personal experiences to the readings. These readings were more about how each of the authors lived his or life and reflecting on it. They were very precautious and careful. Some of the authors saw it as a good thing, and others wished they would have lived more carefree. However, there was a commonality between them that they got to relax and enjoy life more as an older person.
We also watched a film about aging. It was about a man who stopped working to take care of his sickly mother. His daughter was worried about him since he had to move in with her and he also didn’t have a job. The man also cared for other seniors and drove them around. There is so much care that older people need and there just isn’t enough. Older people may have to depend on their children for care and support. Even though they do not see it as troublesome since they want to take care of their parents, it does have a huge impact on their life. There should be more affordable programs and services that seniors have access.
