On Wednesday, June 6th the Life Course Scholars spent our day (half of it) at the Healthy Aging Symposium presenting our HAP presentation boards. Rather then being in lecture we spent it here of which we had the amazing opportunity to show our work to the individuals in this event. I loved seeing all the elders and staff pass by our work and stop to read them, there were people who would come back and take pictures because they wanted to read it at home more carefully. It was so adorable seeing them take pictures and be so excited about the work we did.
My board was in collaboration with Elizabeth on Barrio Logan, everything seemed amazing on the board the only thing that we caught was that one of the elders there mentioned that next time maybe we should just mention what is affordable housing. She is currently working on a program that allows for affordable housing but affordable housing can mean so many things to many people. She goes on to mention that maybe affordable can be up to $2,000 for someone based on their income but with her program it’s a cap of 30% of what people make in their income. I thought this was really good input because we did not specify what affordable housing was, except mentioning that the affordable apartments in Barrio Logan ranged from about $1,100-$1,300 approximate but this is a great input that next years’ cohort should address as well.
I also had the opportunity to speak with a woman who mentioned being part of a current study by one of the guest speakers at the symposium. I think the program was called SAGE or something around those lines. The program started off with just a phone call but it currently gives their patients a really long questionnaire that consist of several question from their health, physical activity, social, environment and so much more. Although it is very long, the individual I was speaking to says its great because there is so much input, for example their physical activity may not be the same but they health and living has extended so much. Those were the stats the guest speaker was giving to them that day.
It was a great experience being there on Wednesday and listening to everyone’s comments on how great the posters were (I will attach images of the posters). I really enjoyed doing this, although I was nervous on presenting but it all went great and overall was a great experience. It was just sad saying bye to everyone, I am graduating and might not see them again but I just want them all to know that they will always have a friend in me and that I am just a text or call away. Also thank you to Dr. Bussell and Dr. Lewis for being amazing and humble professors, we couldn’t have asked for anyone else because you both are simply amazing individuals. Thank you for the hard work you put into this program and for allowing me to be part of it. I learned so much through this experience and I know that it has also taught so much to my peers in this cohort of LCS. Continue being those amazing professors, take care and best wishes always (:
