To be frank, I did not want to get out of bed. The air was quite chilly for a Saturday and I wanted nothing more than to continue to be soothed by the warmth of my blankets. I soon came to remember after awaking the 100 mini-cupcakes that were waiting in my fridge to be eaten my an amazing group of seniors.
As I came to my senses and got ready for the day, I was anxiously waiting for the response to my delectable treats. I was up all night trying to make them look beautiful, each with their own little cup cake wrapper, cake mix, frosting, and ensemble of sprinkles. I was nervous that maybe no one would like them, or that they would taste terrible (I had my boyfriend try them but his opinion was biased).
Upon arriving to the Gary and Mary West Center, I could not believe how beautiful the set up of the event was. There were so many clothes, plants and activities for the seniors to partake in. I was amazed by everyone’s hardwork. Since each group was doing their own activity, I couldn’t really gauge how they were planning on implementing their activity, but it was well worth the wait.
When the first group of seniors came through the event I felt my heart skip a beat. Would they like what we put together? Would they eat our treats? Would they like the care bags we put together? I wanted so bad for them to enjoy this experience as much as I enjoyed putting it on. To my relief, it seemed as though they loved it.
The entire event felt like one emotion filled whirlwind. Everything felt like it was going by at lightening speed, but there were a few moments that made my heart melt. When I approached the art center, I noticed that Jeremy was painting an image of the lady in front of him without her noticing. It was beautifully done and my heart felt so warm seeing how much he enjoyed painting her. Their exchange was one of the most beautiful moments of the day. The woman’s eye and face lit up when she saw the piece and Jeremy was so happy to give it to her.
That exchange made my week! After many more conversations and cupcakes later, we neared the end of our event. I noticed we had about 30 goodie bags left and I wanted to make sure everyone got one. I put all the bags on my arms and strutted my way into the center. I made my way through every room, offering a bag to each person I met. Their face lit up when they saw the bag and gave thanks to me and the school for our donations. It was such a fulfilling part of the journey of our class, seeing all of our hard work come to fruition and make a difference in the day of an incredible group of people.
