Here we are in the good ol’ LCS class. We started with debriefing with the LEG that happened in the last class. Most of my classmates had similar experiences, that the seniors were welcoming and friendly. However, Chase, had a very different one. The senior that he spoke with did not see aging as something wonderful and had negative feelings towards what we do. I don’t blame her for that because of what she had been though and how much she had suffered. This is the point of class, to learn about different aging experiences and not just expect good ones. There are people that just hate aging and they have good reasons to. From what I learn and experience from this class, I hope to improve the aging experience for people in the future, especially people that are suffering and face difficulties while aging.
Then the reading discussion happened. I enjoyed this week’s readings because it included the grandparents’ role in the family. I really loved my grandparents and my grandma, which is my only grandparent that is still alive. As she ages and her Alzheimer’s is developing, I have noticed that her role in the family has drastically changed. She went from the respected elder and helped to raise her grandchildren, to becoming the one that had to be taken care of. Sometimes she gets angry because she notices she is treated like a child, and sometimes she gets sad because she misses her life back then.
Professor Bussell, it was just her this class because Professor Lewis was going to her eldest daughter’s high school graduation out-of-state, met with each of the groups to go over the rough draft of the presentation poster boards. I worked with Stephanie on the NAP for La Jolla. I think we had a good layout and idea of what we wanted on the board. Professor Bussell’s feedback was very helpful and we made the necessary changes.
