As we near the end of the quarter I’ve found myself reflecting on this course and how much I’ve learned from it. This has definitely been one of my favorite courses at UCSD and I’ve found myself telling everyone to take it if they have the chance.
A few weeks ago we took the trolley to Barrio Logan to assess the age friendliness of the neighborhood. While the neighborhood had a strong sense of community, they were lacking in walkability. The sidewalks were very bumpy and I found myself tripping over them. I can only imagine how an elderly person would feel. The sidewalk was also so narrow that trying to fit a wheelchair would be so difficult. There were also not enough grocery stores nearby to serve the entire community. Despite these cons, the sense of community was great. The community seemed very close knit and despite the gentrification that’s happened. The murals showcase the culture of the area and how nothing will break them up.
The following week we went to Casa de Mañana. I was surprised to see the variety of services offered which helps to justify the price. The residents seem so happy which I can understand based on where they live. Casa is a place I’d love to retire at.
Overall this class has been a wonderful experience. Part of me wishes it was 2 quarters so that it wouldn’t feel like it was ending. I’ve also appreciated the size of this class because I’ve had the chance to get to know all of my roommates which is something that rarely happens.
