Here we are again at Casa de Manana Retirement Community. We got into small groups and sat around a table with a few of the seniors that live there. First each NAP groups shared the findings with the group of their respective community. This was to give an idea of what an ideal, age-friendly city would be. Then each of the groups put their thoughts on a large butcher paper. Both, the students and the seniors, had great ideas.
I think everybody learned a lot from this experience. It was an intergenerational discussion about how to make the world a better place for people of all ages. What the residents shared was very insightful since it’s from the point of view of the people we are mainly trying to help. And we are all going to get to that age in the future, so these types of changes are important and necessary. The residents also said that they really enjoy activities like these, where multiple generations of people come together and share ideas with an open-mind. There is an intergenerational discussion on the 2nd Friday of each month as Casa de Manana that I am a part of. It is just like this and we also focus on different topics each time. The LCS students should come to enjoy the experience and there is much to gain from it. We learn from them just as much as they learn from us.
