During this class, a couple of the LCS alumni shared their experience in the program and their Healthy Aging Projects (HAPs). Their individual projects were very interesting and I was considering to inherit or join in on some of them. The tips that they shared were helpful and gave me a better idea on the type of HAP I should do. What I got from it, is that I can do anything that I am interested in. It doesn’t have to be something big, I can start somewhere small and build a base for my future endeavors. I am thinking of working in a small group since it seems like a lot of work and resources to take on a HAP by myself.
We then went over the class HAPs that we will be doing, the Senior Prom and Partner Dance at the end of the quarter. We went over which committees/responsibilities (decorations, activities/raffle, and food) we would like to take on. I wanted to help out in all of them, but especially in decorations. I am really excited for the two events, it sounds like a lot of fun. Even though it is a lot of work and preparation, it will definitely be worth it when I see all of the seniors’ happy and grateful faces.
We were reminded that the Oral History Project due date was coming up. It is the same week as the Selling the Fountain of Youth: How the Anti-Aging Industry Made a Disease Out of Getting Old and Made Billions book presentation. I haven’t lead a discussion on a book or even wrote a book report since high school, hopefully my group and I will do well.
The Neighborhood Assessment Project (NAP) was then introduced to us. We chose some neighborhoods or cities in San Diego that we may be interested in exploring and narrowed it down to three: Golden Hill/North Park, Barrio Logan, and La Jolla. I am doing the NAP on La Jolla with four other LCSers. Even though I have been here for 4 years, I haven’t really explored it and given it a good look. Since I am still young and healthy, I do not really pay attention if the area is age-friendly or not. So I am looking forward to how La Jolla and the other neighborhoods do on the assessment.
Until next time, peace!
