This past class was full of things to discuss and learn. We began my talking about the event that my group and I had at bayside. The event consisted of an instructor facilitating a painting on a canvas (bird). After discussing how well our event went we had a professor come in and give a lecture on how to make a professional poster. I really enjoyed having this lecture because I have never done this before and I think it’s a great opportunity to learn because this will definitely be something that I may have to do in future jobs or graduate school. I also really enjoyed seeing the examples she offered in class of what may or may not be an ideal poster, being able to see examples and how to make one has made me feel much better about putting together the poster. I will be working with Elizabeth to put together a poster for Barrio Logan, although Elizabeth has experience in making one I am really looking forward to learn more from her. After having the poster lecture we got right into the stories that my peers had to present.
In one of the stories, John asked if any of us knew anyone that may have gone through what the main character went through which was marrying young and learning a lot on her own etc. As I read this story it reminded me so much of my grandmother, when my grandmother was very young both her parents passed away. She was one of the youngest therefor her older sisters and brothers were already married, she left to live with one of her sisters when her parents passed away. My grandmother describes that living with her older sister was terrible, they treated her like she was a servant rather then a teenager who had just lost her parents. Her days consisted of cleaning the house, doing their laundry, cooking, etc. while her sister did nothing besides demand what and what shouldn’t be done. During her time living with her sister, my grandmother met my grandfather who at the time was a few years older than her and just like the character from the story she married young at about 15-16 years old. My mother also described my grandmother’s life the same way she explained to me but my mother goes on to mention that when she and her sisters were younger she would tell them to enjoy life and that they were only young once therefor to make the best of it and not marry so young. My grandmother loves my grandfather and therefor never thinks it’s a mistake to have gotten married so young but she does explain that marrying so young comes with lots of responsibilities as a wife, all her life she did chores, cooking, etc. therefor she never really had a life of her own to enjoy without being occupied with things to do. I think that the story reflected a lot of what my grandmother went through but it also shows how strong of a woman she is and how she has always told her children not to do what she did. Mothers always want the best for their children but there are times when we don’t see that but as we grow older we learn to see their point and understand they were correct.
