To end this year’s cohort of LCS, I want to take a minute and talk about the NAP & HAP. The NAP that I was part of was in collaboration with Elizabeth, Jackie, Sylvia and Rhiannon. Our NAP took place in Barrio Logan, a culturally rich urban neighborhood located between downtown San Diego, interstate 5, and the port of San Diego. To access if this neighborhood was age friendly we used the WHO’s 8 key frameworks that consisted of the following and their purpose:
1. Outdoor spaces and Buildings
The outdoor spaces and buildings concentrates on a clean city, well maintained pavements/roads, green spaces, pedestrian friendly walkways, available outdoor seating, and accessible buildings.
2. Transportation
Age friendly transportation concentrates on affordable, reliable, and safety public transportation with adequate sheltered stops and accessible ramps, seating, etc.
3. Housing
Age friendly housing concentrates on affordable housing, well adapted housing for elders, location in close proximity to services, and comfortable housing.
4. Social Participation
Age friendly social participation concentrates on activities that are convenient and affordable to elders, variety of activities available, and fostering community integration
5. Respect and Social Inclusion
Age friendly respect and social inclusion concentrates on respectful, inclusive and safe services for elderly, intergenerational activities, and public education
6. Civic Participation and Employment
Age friendly civic participation and employment concentrates on the range of options available for elderly to participate including employment, training, accessibility, pay and value.
7. Community and health services
Age friendly community support and health services concentrates on the well distribution of health and social services, residential care facilities, and emergency planning and care.
8. Communication and information
Age friendly communication and information concentrates on the distribution of information for programs, large lettering for printed information, and accessibility to computers/internet
Stats that we found very interesting about Barrio Logan is that the population was about 15,897 but the gender ratio was 70% male vs. 30% female. What was most surprising however was that the age range was 57% got those 18-34c years old vs. 10% over 55 years old. This data is very important because when we visited Barrio Logan we did not see many elders at all, I think the most we saw were between 2-3 and at first were were like hmm why is this the case but then when we analyzed it more in debt we saw that not many elders live in this community. I am not sure exactly why but overall Barrio Logan is somewhat age friendly, it has to improve 100% on their senior center (always closed), better paved side walks/sewage, shelter on buss stops, more bike lanes, parking space and more intergenerational activities in general.
Art from The Heart, was the HAP event held at Bayside Community Center geared towards elders and adolescents to come together in an intergenerational activity (painting) facilitated step by step with an amazing paint instructor, Ms. Kristin. This event allowed elders to express themselves through art, be taught art techniques but most importantly a fun and social atmosphere in which all ages interacted. The painting that was painted that day was a beautiful white bird! I am not a fan of birds, I am super scared of them but this painting was just so beautiful and not to mention Ms. Kristin facilitated it very easy. I am not a painter or drawer but she most definitely made it easy. Art has always been stressful to me but the experience I had this day made me want to do this again, not just because of the paint but because I had the opportunity to engage with elders while painting, it was very nice interacting with these elders in this community because they are so expressing of their paint and also like making conversation with us at the same time.
Although I was not part of putting together the HAP presentation board my peers, Monique and Kyle did a wonderful job putting it together. The participant’s experiences were as follow:
• 17 seniors and 7 UCSD students
• 58.8% of seniors completed the survey
• 100% felt the event met their experience
• 90% felt more connected to younger people (YAY)
• 90% would like to have more intergenerational activities (YAY)
Overall, Art from The Heart was an outstanding event that we had the opportunity to put together, and its all thanks to my peers and our wonderful professors, Dr. Bussell and Dr. Lewis.
