The 3rd class for Life Course Scholars took up all the class time, it was packed with things to discuss and even watch a movie. We began by discussing our visit to Casa De Manana on April 25th. Rather then getting a tour of the place we were told that we would discuss our NAP. I was part of the Barrio Logan project and Dr. Lewis gave us some time to discuss what each member was going to present on. The presentation was to refresh on what we observed and present it to elders in Casa De Manana in order to start an activity with them that requires getting the residents to discuss what changes they would like to see in their community or what makes a neighborhood age friendly.
After this discussion we continued onto the individual presentations about World of Difference: Inequality in the Aging Experience. I really enjoyed reading these short stories and getting a deep analyzation from the presenters. I think that is it very important to live our life to the fullest because we wouldn’t want to regret it down the road, it is very true that many believe they need to work hard right now and then enjoy it down the road but I think that we can make time for everything. We don’t know when life will be taken from us, therefor I have always believed to live life as if it was our last one (my mother always says that), we don’t always need money to have a good time with friends and family. Cherishing what we have not is valuable and will help us grow into the person we are meant to be, therefor this week’s readings was very influential especially hearing different things from my class mates.
Our third discussion after the short stories presentations was to update on our Healthy Aging Project. Based on our project we got an instructor, Ms. Kristin who will be our instructor for a beautiful bird painting for the community as Bayside. I will attach an image of the bird she will be instructing on. Also the event is May 4th (this Friday) for anyone who wants to come along (: Please come!
We ended the class by watching a movie that was focused on aging, retirement, social security and programs that one of the main individuals was part of. Watching this movie reminded me so much of public health courses and USP courses I took with Dr. Lewis. I liked how the movie discussed all sorts of issues that people faced (elders) but how there are programs out there that can benefit those 65 and older to work longer and motivate them to see their skills and continue to use them.
