This past class we did several things. We began by discussing the site visit to Bayside Community and I was surprised to hear that a lot of my peers also thought that the Zumba was a little more intense then we thought it would be but overall everyone had a great experience. After discussing out site visit we began the book presentation, This Chair Rocks. I really liked how this group presented the book and made it a little clearer of what the main ideas were. I liked the book but not as much as the first book, I think this one was a little harder to follow for me because of the way it was organized or structured but overall it was a good book. It discusses the attitude that society has today of growing old but also go against all the myths against aging. It was very interesting that she brought up the topic about sex and intimacy but I think it was a good thing because it corrects common misperceptions of this topic as well as aging. My peers did a great job of discussing and presenting this work, it was also really nice to have them bring in treats to get us to talk (:
After the book presentation we were able to discuss HAP and NAP. The healthy aging project went well, I am part of the food/raffle section, for Casa de Manana food did not take so much planning since it will be provided there. Two weeks ago my committee and I made a list of possible foods and Jessica was able to hand that to Kelly and she took some of those snack lists and will have them there. I am very excited for the HAP and look forward to them! After discussing this we went on the talk about the NAP, my group and I have gone to visit Barrio Logan once but this week will be going again and begin working on our project. I had been to Barrio Logan but just to eat never actually explore the place, so when I went with my group two weeks back it was really nice and I really enjoyed it. I think that it is very interesting how you can be walking on a sidewalk in Barrio Logan and the sidewalk right across looks so different then the once you are walking on. I am excited for this project and brining it all together with pictures and the WHO’s framework to see if this community is age friendly or not. It was also very nice of Dr. Bussell to show us websites that we can visit to help us with our NAP.
The last thing we did in lecture was the oral presentations, I was part of it this time and I was so nervous! I get so nervous and embarrassed talking in front of people but I think it was a great start to me learning how to speak in front of people. I really appreciate my peers and professors for being there and not making it so hard, everyone is always so kind, understanding, and focused on what you have to say. Everyone’s oral presentation was AMAZING and I am sure that it will be something beautiful when its handed down to our EP.
