During the first week of classes, my HAP group and I were finally able to plan out all the logistics for the project and revise the flyer, which I was relieved to settle. The next step for these first couple weeks are gathering contacts of seniors interested in participating in our HAP, and we have been contacting relatives, a pen pal, a church, and senior communities.
In the second and third weeks of classes, we discussed lessons from the Happiness is a Choice You Make book. I learned that seniors save their mental energy by remembering mainly happy memories instead of negative ones. It makes sense that a senior would favor this way of thinking because remembering and reminiscing on happier times of their lives can improve their mood and increase feelings of happiness, which can also better their sense of wellbeing. I also learned about senior wisdom and romantic relationships in the aging population. When I grow old, I probably wouldn’t be interested in romantic relationships. Maybe my interests may be different in the future, but when it comes to love, I feel a bit uncomfortable about it.
This book also helped me reframe my mind and prejudices about old age. I find that many people think of old age negatively in comparison to the younger generation. I wish to spread positivity within senior communities because I believe that with the good spirit, seniors can feel more empowered and capable, even if parts of their lives may seem to be lacking in some ways.
