During the third week of classes, I had to get myself ready to prepare the book
presentation with my groupmates about the book Selling the Fountain of Youth, which I didn’t start reading until I received my book in the middle of week 2, so I committed myself to reading two chapters a day. Since I was often busy throughout the day and week with classes and various meetings, I compensated some sleep time to reading the book. Writing a summary after reading each chapter would have helped, but I was still able to look for key and helpful information from the book to include in the presentation. My whole group met through zoom twice before we had to present, and I thought that everyone within the team was very collaborative and helpful. When presentation day came in week 4, Fascio, Kassidy, and Jenny represented the team in discussing the content we had prepared for the class. Some of my team members and I were a little worried if someone’s audio may lag or break out in the middle of their turn, but the whole presentation turned out really great. The discussion was also very fruitful, as we discussed the critiques of the book, the anti-aging industry’s claims, and the uses and risks of using anti-aging products. From the book, I found connections of the content with what I was learning from my Human Physiology I course. The book talked a lot about the use of human growth hormones (HGH), Botox, cortisol, Cushing’s syndrome, Addison’s disease, and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which were all discussed in my BIPN 100 class. Observing these connections, I was able to gain further interest in what I was learning in my classes overall.
For my project with my extraordinary person, I have been consistently meeting with her through zoom for two days per week, so I have completed the three memories so far and am now working to further polish the draft with the help of my EP’s feedback. Throughout the meetings, I feel that I have created a greater bond with my EP, who I never would have suspected that I could click with very well. She has shown her understanding and respect about what I share with her, which has brought me to think a little differently about Christians. I have been enjoying the process of writing the memoir so far, but I think the most fun and rewarding part would be making the project and putting the memoirs together. Throughout this process of writing the memoirs, I have also learned some precious life lessons from my EP, which can be seen in the main message of the whole memoir. For the final product of the memoir, I have been thinking about creating something special for my EP, who gave me a pot of beautiful succulents for me to start getting into planting succulents. I was so touched that I plan to make something big for my EP. It may perhaps involve an activity with her or a big project for me, which I wouldn’t mind because I like seeing my creative ideas come to life.
