Initially when signing up for LCS, I thought that most of our classes would be spent in class. I thought we would learn about the current setup for seniors in our communities through watching videos, writing essays, and reading books. However, we actually spent most of our classes outside of the classroom. We went on many site visits and were able to see senior homes in person and interact with the seniors living there. I find these site visits to be integral to the LCS program because it offers a perspective that one can't quite get if they never experience these places in person before. Like other classes, we had projects, presentations and writing assignments (weekly blogs) that supplemented our understanding of healthy aging.
It was a memorable experience planning with the class for the Senior Prom. It was touching when while the seniors were making their way out, they would thank me for putting on this event and that they had a fun time. It made me think about the lack of events dedicated towards seniors especially for those who don't have the financial means to live in a location or a senior home where these events may be more abundant. Another highlight is the oral history project. that provided me the perfect opportunity to learn more about my grandma. It inspired me to continue to ask questions to other older adults in my life so these memories are not forgotten.
With the COVID-19 pandemic, I was quite sad to hear that classes will be switched to remote learning and wondered how will that impact our class for next quarter. I was looking forward to the future site visits that our professors had planned and conducting our Healthy Aging Project in person with my group in the Spring. It would feel different not being able to go on site visits anymore because that what set this class apart from other classes. I thought about the seniors who take the bus to the Gary and Mary West Wellness Senior Center to socialize with their friends and how this outbreak will affect them especially when they may not have the ability to call or videocall with their friends instead. I hope they find a way to relieve the isolation that they may feel during this period of time. I also have strong faith in Professors Bussell and Lewis to structure our class next quarter in a way that would still be in engaging. Overall, I wish everyone stays safe and healthy during this outbreak and I'm excited to see what is planned for next quarter.
