For our Oral History Extended Assignment, we had to go back and interview our EPs to ask them what crises they had faced in their lifetimes and what lessons can they pass on to us that can help us get through this COVID-19 pandemic. I reached out to my grandma, who was my original EP, but she declined the interview because she wasn't feeling well and didn't know how to answer the question. I didn't want to press her to answer any further, so I reached out to one of my former high school teachers, Karen Flummerfelt. She was my biology, chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Science Bowl coach in high school. I sensed that she knew a lot of things, so it would be suitable to ask her for her advice.
After analyzing what my new EP said and my classmates' EPs, I saw there were similar patterns on how they coped during a crisis like persevering, doing the best that you can with your circumstances, finding a supportive network, listening to authority, and caring for others. Also, I noticed how many of their lessons were similar to the lessons from the elders in the book that we have been reading. Since there were a lot of similarities between the lessons we learned, it must indicate that their coping strategies are effective and can help us cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. Aside from that, it was really interesting to learn about what other crises the EPs had faced in their lives, what actions they took, and how it shaped them as a person.
