For class this Wednesday, we presented our Age-Friendly Neighborhood Assessment projects. It was interesting and insightful to learn about the neighborhoods everyone had chosen. I liked learning how age-friendly each neighborhood was and I felt like I got a glimpse of what life is like in that neighborhood. Tiffany and I worked on our NAP together because we were doing the same neighborhood which was Chinatown in Los Angeles. Tiffany was a great partner to work with because we divided the work pretty evenly and helped each other along the way. It was actually pretty fun to research and learn more about Chinatown. I discovered new things such as services that I didn't even know that was offered. I was surprised to even find out that counties or cities had an aging plan, so that was new. Originally, I wanted to go out and take pictures of the elders playing mahjong, doing Tai Chi together, or going about their everyday life to capture a more accurate portrait of what it's like in Chinatown because Google was pretty limited in that aspect. However, I wasn't able to because first, there's no seniors out there right now due to stay-at-home orders and social distancing and second, I don't think my parents would want me to go out and risk getting infected. Nonetheless, I still think Tiffany and I did a great job finding photos for the assignment. Overall, I'm really that it gave me the opportunity to think about how age-friendly it is to live in Chinatown from an elder's perspective and learn what challenges that they may currently face trying to survive in this community.
One of our assignments for this quarter was to create an infographic, video, or some sort of creative way to debunk one ageist myth. The ageist myth that I chose was seniors don't have sex. I selected this one in particular because of how we forget that even seniors have sex too and desire intimacy with others. Since this idea isn't discussed often, elders are overlooked when it comes to topics of HIV and sexually transmitted diseases. As a result, safe sex practices, resources, and treatments aren’t catered to them as it is with teens. I decided to convey my information through an animated video using an online animated video maker. I imagined that a video might be more entertaining to an audience.
On Wednesday, we each presented to the class our assignment. It was very informative to hear the many myths that other people have chosen. I was amazed by the creativity people used to communicate their info. For example, I really liked Alex's infographic because I would have never thought of doing it in a way where people choose between different options, but ultimately end up with the same result. I liked how her infographic was interactive and her drawing skills are good too. I also liked the videos that were presented. For example, Sophia's video involved interviewing her friends for their opinions on aging. It was nice to see different perspectives from others in my age group. Overall, I was surprised by my classmates' ingenuity with their assignments. |
