We had a very productive day in class this week. We started off the day by talking about our HAPs and sharing pictures of our events with everyone. Everyone in my group was really excited to talk about our events and I think we were all very happy to know that there is a strong possibility that future cohorts might continue with our program. Next, we had a workshop on our posters. It was really useful to get feedback on our poster and I also learned a lot from the feedback other groups received on their posters. After going over the posters, we presented our debunking ageism assignments. I had partnered with Deanna and we made an infographic to debunk the myth that “seniors don’t contribute to society and they can’t learn new skills”. I really enjoyed doing this assignment because it gave us the opportunity to do some research and learn about the different types of misconceptions society has about seniors and then disprove these misconceptions with accurate data. In order to debunk the myth that seniors can’t contribute to society, one of the points we talked about is that most volunteers in non-profit organizations are seniors. A lot of seniors are involved with mentoring young children. In many communities, seniors also devote their time to helping other seniors stay active physically, mentally and socially. I was also really impressed with the other projects presented in class. From blogs and twitter accounts to brochures and memes, each project was so unique and creative. Overall, I really enjoyed class this week and I feel like I learned a lot.
