The housing tour was a fascinating experience for me because I got to see different affordable housing models. I have visited other assisted living facilities in LA, and many of them were very fancy and offered a comfortable environment for seniors to spend their time after retirement, but the locations that we visited were very different. I was surprised to learn that many seniors live with only $950 a month, which is below the poverty level, and paying rents can be very expensive especially living in Downtown. Despite the fact that Sara Francis Hometel may not be an ideal place for many seniors to live because they might need some assistance, it is better than having no place to stay or using up all their income for their rents. It is just unfortunate to see that many seniors are struggling to find an affordable housing after their retirement.
Being part of LCS program would allow me to explore the issues of aging that are presented in our local community. Because of we, as college students, are separated from the older generation and very isolated from the problems that exist in our society, simply due to the fact that we often do not reach out and perhaps neglect the increasing population of elders. Therefore, this LCS program provides a platform for UCSD students to learn and connect with elders in San Diego community. So far, my understanding of the aging experience is still very basic, and there are often some misconception and myths about aging. Everyone needs to walk through different stages of aging. In fact, becoming old is not scary and does not mean that elders lose their independence. They can still enjoy their lives by spending their times on activities that they did not have time to do when they were young.
