In our second class on January 15th, we began to plan the class HAP, the senior prom at the Gary and Mary West Senior Center, and began to brainstorm on possible group/individual HAP ideas. The Healthy Aging Projects (HAPs) are one of the parts of the class that especially influenced me in joining, so I was pretty excited to hear how it would work out. Dr. Lewis, Dr. Bussel, and the TA’s gave examples on what past HAP’s looked like, including the senior prom which is now being worked on as a class HAP. Joey and Nicolette’s project was one of the past HAPs that especially stood out to me. I felt it targeted a special topic of wellness for older adults as beauty standards highly value youth. Furthermore, it applied elements that allowed the seniors to really enjoy themselves. . I hope to be able to create a HAP that addresses something important to the seniors while appropriately tackling it. The HAP should be something the seniors of the center I choose want and need. Although I’m still trying to figure out what I’d like to do as my HAP, some pretty good ideas were thrown out during the brainstorm session.
As for the class HAP planning session, the progress in one class period seemed to flow relatively smoothly. I feel we were able to tackle the ideas behind most of what was needed and mainly needed to get into the execution period after. I’m excited to see how the class HAP turns out and hope it becomes a success!
