Navigating the first few weeks of the quarter in LCS and in all my classes overall were interesting to say the least. Remote learning, of course, isn’t the most ideal. However, given these difficult times for vast populations of people in the world, it is the best when we can do. I’m grateful to have so many thoughtful professors who have worked to quickly adapt their coursework to this platform and who listen to the input of their students. Many classes have implemented creative ways to keep the course engaging while remaining cognizant to each individual’s situation. While I am sad to not be able to foster the human connections with the older adult population we usually are able to through life course scholars, our professors have done a great job at trying to keep the class as interactive and as connected as we possibly can. For example, the Superpods are a great way to stay connected and have a small group of support within the class. Furthermore, despite the lack of in-person meetings, I’m still glad to see the class as a whole is still dedicated to exploring the issues in the aging population, especially now when they are placed in a more vulnerable spot.
I’m most particularly excited to have started the Book Club on “Happiness is a Choice You Make” by John Leland. The book is about the lessons the author had learned from interviewing several olders adults aged 90+ for the course of a year. In the last years of their life, Leland’s interviewees had so much wisdom to give and I’m still learning everyday how to implement these lessons into my life.
