On February 12th, the Life Course Scholars were able to meet the social and wellness supervisor, Chris, as well as as the Older Adult Program supervisor, Aviva, at the Jewish Family Services Center in downtown San Diego. It was so wonderful to meet Aviva who was extremely passionate about her work in the Older Adult Program as well as Jewish Family Services in general. Some key programs that are provided by this center are the safety and security net for homeless people living in cars to park in safe zones, an Older Adult program that boosts greater quality of life, and a point-based supermarket. All of the services provided by this non-profit organization was truly inspiring because it truly demonstrated how innovative ideas can really elevate and assist others– such as their partnership with Vons and Starbucks to refer to those in need of leftovers that would just have been thrown out otherwise. Chris and Aviva both shared wonderful stories and insight on how the services from this organization are run. After the Life Course Scholars were able to join in on some rounds of nursery rhyme bingo with the older adults in the program. It was so much fun socializing, and singing nursery rhymes with Linda (one of the lovely older adults I was able to meet today)! It was surprising to me that I could barely recall all these nursery rhymes, but many of the other older adults could sing every word of every rhyme! The tour and the activity made for some really interesting healthy aging project ideas like a game night at one of the previous centers we went to, integrating a music class of some sort, and etc. I am excited to revisit again next quarter and work with Chris and Aviva again!
