Today we were in class again going through several presentations. The majority of the time we listened to our colleagues’ presentations of their oral history projects. There were a lot of amazing stories and lots of creative ideas. I think what was most impactful from today was getting able to hear the different backgrounds that everyone has. Like myself may of my classmates come from families that immigrated here to the United states and everyone has families that put a lot of importance on education. It was also my turn to give a presentation on a current event. My group decide to talk about the problem of self inflicted elder abuse. Many older people slip into a cycle of depression and self neglect. While it isn't know what comes first . It is clear that this is an issue that government and state agencies don't know how to approach. Many times when incident like there are reported to government health agencies but the workers do not know how to handle the cases.
There are more cases in the low income low educated populations this can lead to increased cases of hospitalization, illness, ER visits, death, and are more likely to suffer from other forms of elder abuse. We proposed the discussion question: What possible efforts can be done moving forward to decrease the rate of elderly self-neglect? Home care aide? Physical therapist? Weekly house-cleaning? Meal on wheels? What are your thoughts …
There are a lot of way to address this issue one way may be what the other group presented: robot caretakers. These devices can help connect patients to their loved ones, help patients remember to talk their medications, and give doctors real time feedback about their patients. This is one step that could be taken to begin filling in the gaps for caretakers and help patients remain connected with their community. As technology continues to advance we need to allocate resources to begin startup programs that can help the elders in our society.
