This week we held our senior prom event at the Gary and Mary West Senior Center. From the moment I walked into the door I could tell that they were so excited to have us planning this event! They helped pick up from the daily lunch and we quickly began to decorate and set up our food! The theme of the Prom was Circus! It was great to have colorful decorations and silly boas and glasses for the photo booth. As we were decorating a senior mentioned to be how excited they were for our event. We had pizza, churros, a chocolate dipping station, and apple juice for everyone. As soon as the doors opened, people starting to come in and we started passing out food!
It was so satisfying to put on this event in particular, I could tell that everyone was enjoying their time. Even though we couldn’t provide the best food or games as soon as people started playing the games and using the photobooth I could tell that they were genuinely enjoying themselves.
The highlight of the event for me was seeing the prom king and queen. I had talked to the prom queen last time we were at the center and I she recognized me as I walked into the building! It was so sweet to see the first dance and see the enthusiasm in the room! Other seniors joined in to dance afterwards!
I think holding this event at this center in particular was very significant. These are people who are from low income background and they were so grateful for everything we did there. It shows how important it is for us, as a society, to give to those who are most in need. Seniors in general are often overlooked but especially seniors who are from disadvantaged backgrounds. There is a clear need for more support for centers like this one and support for seniors in these situations. This event reminded me that there are so many senior out there in need of support and as future professionals we will be able to have great influence in the lives of seniors around us.
