These past two weeks we have been presenting our oral history projects about our extraordinary people. The extraordinary people were comprised of my fellow classmate’s parents, grandparents, family friends, co-workers, etc. This oral history project entailed documenting the life story of an extraordinary person in our lives who is 55 or older and it was essential to identify a key theme of their lives. As we divulge into their past, present, and future endeavors it was eye-opening and amazing to listen to all the adventures and challenges they have experienced. What I recognized from everyone presenting so far is the unexpected knowledge and wisdom gained from this project. From hearing a variety of anecdotes, we were able to distinguish and identify what people valued and how they implemented it throughout their entire lives. Some prominent themes I noticed from our presentations were people’s passions and persistence to ensure their or their loved one’s happiness. Every extraordinary person dealt with their own hardships whether it be identity-crisis, financial insecurity, or no support system, yet they were able to overcome those obstacles by their drive and determination.
Each extraordinary person inspired me to live life in a new way. One lesson I learned was to do what I love when it comes to my career choice, ultimately I should do what makes me happy. Another lesson I learned was to put as much effort and support in all my relationships that I value. It is important to show others how you value them and ensure they also value their relationship with you. With life being crazy with different responsibilities and tasks, our values and how we implement it into our lives can be lost in translation. Its nice having these opportunities with the oral history projects and current event presentations to remember what is truly important in life.
