From reading and writing our book club assignments to conducting healthy aging projects to responding back to our correspondences, it has been a fast-pace start to spring quarter. In regard to our book club assignments for John Leland’s Happiness is A Choice You Make, our cohort has weekly discussions about the assigned chapter readings and what the main lessons and takeaways are. Essentially what guides our conversations is the questions we individually create; we are then split up into breakout rooms of four or five people and we are assigned different questions to talk about. The latest breakout room included Kiela, Stephanie, Martin, Danny, and myself. We had an insightful conversation about maintaining healthy relationships with people we love and care for whether they be young or old. The consensus we all came to about healthy relationships and how to maintain them is based on individual values, love languages, and willingness to receive and give help. This allowed me to reflect on the relationships I have had with my elder family members; my grandparents would always offer me support with anything whether it be for transportation, food, or something as simple as a listening ear. In return, I would always offer them help with technology use, finances, or sharing a laugh about a silly joke. I never realized it until now, but my elder relatives and I practiced good healthy relationships as explained in the book.
In regard to our healthy aging projects, the group I am a part of is the Meet and Mingle Zoom Event. Our group is composed of Fascio, Kiela, Stephanie, Ann, and myself. We created this healthy aging project as an opportunity for the San Diego Senior Community to meet fellow members from different housing and community centers. Our hope is to bridge connections and develop friendships and relationships that allow for more social interactions which are beneficial for one’s psychological, mental, and emotional health. We will facilitate this over Zoom and have multiple breakout rooms with set discussion topics about interests, hobbies, careers, etc. The set date for our event is Friday, May 14th and we already heard back from some community centers that are willing to have their residents participate in this event. There is still more to plan for our event, yet we have the time and dedication to ensure it will run smoothly and hopefully create friendships that will last a lifetime.
