The first few weeks of the Life Scholars Program have gotten off to a great and quick start! We have been reading a book called: Happiness is a Choice You Make by John Leland. It is about a journalist that takes up an assignment on studying the aging process by following a group of older adults for six months. He originally believed that it would just be boring, he would just learn that aging “sucks,” however, instead he learned the beauty of aging, and all of the things we can learn from seniors. He learned about love, loneliness, companionship, hardship, and sex in later life. He developed a deep relationship with each senior, and reflected on how he could analyze their actions and beliefs and implement them in his life. I really enjoy reading this book because it really makes me reflect on my own life as well. His arguments are strong supported by lots of evidence, and how could you argue with an argument that is so optimistic. I am excited to read the rest of the book and learn more about his findings.
These last few weeks I have really developed the idea of my Healthy Aging Process, I am slightly stressed because this is a large project to do by myself and I am worried about getting enough participation from the community. But I also feel that if I can pull this off then it will be so meaningful for many seniors and student organizations. The main idea that I really developed was to look for student organizations on campus to teach seniors classes rather than random individuals from the community. I feel that this is safer and more efficient, plus it will also create intergenerational connections!! I am super excited to see how this further develops!
