This class has been extremely impactful, insightful, and positive for me. I am so glad that I went out on a wim and applied to be part of the class. Not only did I have a lot of great experiences, but it also changed my way of thinking, and made me rethink my career choices. I learned so many things, but most importantly the importance of healthy aging in communities. I hope that all people could have the opportunity of having a good, healthy experience as they age. I will proactively try to improve my family's experience of aging, and take steps to improve others.
I have also loved the experience of writing and talking with older adults from the community. I have always loved talking with older adults as they have the best stories and advice, and they are always good spirited. I once worked in a hospital for a few years for the Hospital Elder Life Program. It was a volunteer program that wanted to improve the experience of a hospital stay for elderly patients. Many times older patients decline in mental and physical health in the hospital because of the lack of interaction with people and nature. Therefore, as volunteers we would spend hours sitting with them and talking, playing games, sitting with them while they ate, we even could give massages. It was always a great experience talking with them and I believe that is what sparked my interest in this class. I could definitely see myself having a career in the future that has a lot of interaction with older adults.
I am also very grateful that even though we are in the middle of a pandemic, and our class focus is on the most at risk population, we have found ways to make this a positive experience. We have even met as a class, which was super impactful for me, nowadays it is very lonely doing online school.
One of my favorite dynamics of the class is the personalized assignments, it truly seems like I am getting much more out of this curriculum than most of my other classes. The blogs are great for reflecting on the content and how I can weave it into my everyday life. I feel I retain a lot more information this way. I also loved how we had a lot of freedom with the oral history project and HAP project. It makes assignments way more interesting and exciting when you can run with your creativity.
Overall, this entire class, the professors, classmates, and elderly friends have all been wonderful. I am so very happy with my decision to take this class, I assume it will be one of my favorites from my college career. Thank you all for that. I look forward to what spring quarter will hold
