Today's class was devoted to a comprehensive review of the main assignments of this quarter, which includes the Oral History Project, NAP, HAP, and the book reading presentations. We started the class with a discussion about the visit to the Gary and Mary West Senior Center and our thoughts about the experience and conversations that we had with the seniors. I agreed with one of my fellow classmate's surprise at the presence of a dentistry inside the senior center, which I also found to be extremely impressive and admirable.
We then talked about our progression with the Oral History Project and the requirements and expectations for the dances at Gary and Mary West Center as well as at Casa de Manana. As we also went over the NAP and HAP, I was again impressed by the breadth and depth of this class. We are not only engaging with numerous seniors of the San Diego community who have great disparities in wealth and quality of life, but we are also actively reaching out to them and trying to benefit their lives through creative, interactive, and enjoyable programs. In addition, we are delving into the community itself and researching its various aspects such as age-friendliness. By now, I learned that the topic of aging consists of numerous subtopics that include aspects of psychology, sociology, biology, and politics.; it is not as simple as I thought it to be. An analysis of aging in these many angles and perspectives will help me comprehend so much and grasp a broad understanding of current issues that face the senior population. As the quarter progresses, I hope that I can take full advantage of this special learning opportunity.
