This Saturday was the Life Course Scholars Retreat. At first, I wasn’t sure of what to expect, but I knew that I was going to have a good time. I was so excited when I got to see past friends like Sabrina, Leslye, and Janan. I haven’t spoken to them for a long time since studying abroad so I was very excited that I was going to have this class to reacquaint myself with old friends as well as work with them on potential group projects throughout the quarter.
One memorable thing that I took away from this retreat were the lecturettes. I really appreciated the professors’ crash courses on urban planning and healthy aging. I found the information given to be quite informative, applicable and memorable. I also liked the supplemental activity we had where we played the “Life Course” Game. This was a really fun game but it was also really impactful because of the harsh realities we had to “endure” when playing this game. The game allowed us to realize the harsh realities that life has to offer, and it definitely reaffirmed my belief that life is not easy, not fair and not free for everybody. I think this game needs to be patented and redistributed to schools across America to spark conversations on privilege and equality.
