This weekend, our HAP group coordinated our event at the West Senior Center. Our event was entitled “Living, Creating, Striving”: a senior wellness day that focused on relaxation, self care and acquiring clothes/accessories. I was excited for this event to happen because we have planned this for weeks now, and it feels satisfying to see our ideas come to life.
To be completely honest, I’m so proud of what our HAP group was able to achieve. Despite not being able to get hair stylists nor massage therapists to come volunteer their time at the event (due to scheduling conflicts), we were still able to adapt to the situation and collectively worked to make other activities that were budget-friendly. We had over 100 seniors come to this event - and we were able to spend this time engaging with seniors and allowing them to be their best selves.
For me, one of the most impactful lessons that came out of this event was taking the time to sit down and speak with the Filipina seniors. They were so delighted that an event like this happened because they don’t have much financial resources to acquire “glamorous” items for themselves. When I was working the jewelry station, a lot of the seniors were asking, “how much?” After telling them that everything was free and just for them, they had the brightest looks/smiles on their faces. Aside from the material benefits that they’ve gained from this event, a lot of seniors expressed that they felt relaxed. Hopefully for next year, more seniors know about this event so that they too can enjoy it too!
