What can I say about these past two weeks? Present, present, present! On February 17th I presented my oral history project on one of my past supervisors part when I worked at UC San Diego’s LGBT Resource Center, Dr. Shaun Travers; I know him as Shaun Travers. I was really excited to present on the stories that Shaun had opened about during our interview sessions. While working at the resource center, we had one-on-ones in the Fall, and Shaun would listen to my life, and I did not learn a lot about Shaun. It was amazing to hear the stories he shared and to see him be vulnerable and explore emotions he probably hadn’t in a while.
During my presentation, I wanted to make sure I did Shaun’s stories justice! Which put a little bit of pressure on me as I saw the previous PowerPoints before me; however, I was super excited for was going to share with the class. For the oral history project, I didn’t have a PowerPoint instead I created a mock-up vinyl record for Shaun. Meaning I created vinyl art in the form of a collage of Shaun’s photos he shared with me. I did this because Shaun was a child of the 80s, and he expressed how many of the artists of the time helped with come to explore his sexuality. One of those artists, Duran Duran, which I bought a bought a record of in a store at Hillcrest. I can’t wait to show and give it to Shaun partly because he thinks I made a memoir book, so I can’t wait to see his reaction.
The following week, I presented alongside Stephanie and Leo on a current event. For our current event, we wanted to dedicate to the unfortunate violence towards Asian-American seniors during the pandemic. For me, it was really hard because I haven’t been in the proper headspace lately and to add, reading and presenting on the uptake in violence brought up past trauma from my past and the trauma of my grandmother shared by my family. Nonetheless, it is an important topic to bring to attention and it was great to see the engagement from the class
