Jewish Family Services (JFS) exists as another example of helping the underserved. Each and every week I get the chance to immerse myself even more among the multiple sites across San Diego that strive to make a difference.
This week we had the chance to tour FJS and celebrate all the good they have been doing for its community. The center has been open for nearly100 years and has been providing services for all people who are in need of food, services, and overall community. Meals on Wheels and Foos Pantry are a few of the services they offer to the people who come into JFS in search of assistance. The volunteers who come to support JFS are all lively and friendly and I could see their passion for serving those in need. My fellow LCS and I were also able to see the storage room they have for food; as well as witness the individuals who work hard to put meals together to send out. JFS actively works to send out help to those who need help and also provide help for those who come into JFS.
My favorite part of the tour was bingo with the elderly. I had the opportunity to have a nice time getting to know Bob, an elderly gentleman who pulled a chair for me to sit next to him. Discussing and laughing over the nursery rhymes my generation didn’t know was an entertaining conversation to have with Bob. The others at the table were all pleasant and actively engaged with bingo. While our time was short together, it was nice getting to know these elderly individuals who live with dementia. Everyone deserves to live with dignity and everyone needs empathy.
