This quarter has been a fantastic experience that has broadened my scope and knowledge relating to healthy aging. Coming in, all I knew was of my interest in serving the elderly, but as the 10 weeks progressed I’ve learned more regarding the stereotypes that must be unlearned, the services offered to the elderly, and the how individual the aging experience is for everyone.
An interesting experience I enjoyed most was the field visit we had exploring the multiple affordable housing options. To see the vast options provided throughout San Diego was truly indicative of the efforts being made to serve our seniors. But the reality of these living options also revealed the quality of living distributed among the San Diego region, some better than others. This makes me wonder how much more must be done to tackle such disparities that exist, or if this is just the best that can be done.
The oral history presentation was truly an experience I am grateful for. Before I didn’t even know my grandfather’s name, nor his story! I never thought I would get the chance to learn of my family’s history and now I’ve started a journey where I must learn more.
This quarter thus far has revealed how much more I will be able to learn! Even with covid-19 going around I believe our HAP projects will still be an experience that we can learn from, as well as an experience that, I hope, will impact the lives of others.
Overall, this class has been nothing but a worthwhile experience that has only deepened my passions for service. Can’t wait to see what the next quarter will bring!
