Today we discussed the second half of the book Happiness is a Choice You Make. I enjoyed this read and think that the lessons learned from the seniors in the book can definitely help and remind us to not be so focused on the small details and to just enjoy life for its precious memories. It is easy for us college students to get lost in the small details instead of focusing on the bigger picture, because of how society is constructed with us associating success and happiness to external factors rather than investing in improving ourselves and our relationships with others. Many of the seniors in the book were able to find happiness despite their circumstances by focusing on what they had in life and trying to make the best out of their situation. This is something that I strive to do and made me reconsider what happiness means to me. I remember when I volunteered in a free clinic as a dental assistant back home, many of the patients I spoke with have gone through many hardships but they were content with their current situation and was thankful for their loved ones and God. The dentist that volunteers there told me that at her regular dental office in downtown San Francisco that she works at, many of her patients are business people and she can see the difference in the patients’ mindsets. She told me that the business people were never happy and always complained, but the patients at the free clinic were worse off than those people but still enjoyed the small things in life. I think regardless of what stage we are in life we are still constantly learning new ways to be happy and I think the best way to tackle life is to have a positive mindset, focus on the important things in life (i.e yourself and loved ones), and be willing to have some failures in order to get some successes.
