This week we presented our NAPs and it was great learning about different parts of San Diego that I have not visited yet. My group did ours on Barrio Logan and through this project I learned more about what makes a neighborhood age friendly. There were so many things that I did not consider that may be challenging for an elderly person to live in place and this project helped me be more aware of my surroundings to consider things like walkability, shelter, housing, and services whenever I go to a new place. It is interesting to see how there are some places that are better suited for certain populations like the working class in Hillcrest and the elderly rich people in the North county seaside neighorboods.
On Saturday, we had our senior prom at the Gary and Mary West Center in downtown San Diego. The theme for the prom was carnival and I feel like we did a great job with the decorations. The food choice was not too healthy though in my opinion because we got a lot of sweets, chocolate, pizza, and churro but it matched with our theme. We started the dance by crowning the prom queen and king and they had their first dance together before everyone joined in. The other seniors watching took out their phones to videocord the dance and I was glad to see that there were people who went up to dance with each other. Compared to the Casa dance, it seems like the seniors at the West Center were more willing to go up and dance without an opposite sex partner. The seniors all seemed to enjoy our company and the gifts we gave them.
