For this project, my team and I produced an interview-styled video inspired by YouTube videos from channels such as Cut and Jubilee. We were able to collect video clips of older adults answering the question: “What advice would you give to the younger generation?” It was neat to see that the final video highlighted a healthy, diverse aging population as we gathered people from all different socioeconomic statuses and backgrounds. Some of our goals were to provide viewers with a wide range of advice from people with different experiences as well as promote intergenerational conversations through an engaging question. Our hope is that viewers may gain new insights from older adults, or perhaps be reminded to consider what is truly important in life. Moreover, interviewers as well as viewers can take the lesson that as a society, we should be more attentive to the opinions and advice of those who are older. Verbal communication is so key when holding a conversation and simply just active listening plays a big role in the engagement factor of a conversation. Some common themes we were able to find is to value education, live in the moment, and chase after your dreams. Such advice are lessons that we all should be taking to heart no matter if we are younger or older.
Currently, there is substantial mis-portrayal of older adults in the media today. With our project we also hope to tackle ageism in the media and entertainment context. Especially as most of the younger generation in society today get their information, ideas and values from platforms like the internet, views and stereotypes of older adults in the media is all the more significant to address and fix.
