Today’s visit to the Balboa Older Adult Program at Jewish Family Services was another eye-opening experience. We were educated on the history of the center, which started with a group of women who came together to help Jewish immigrants transition to the States. From then on, multiple programs (over 50) came into fruition for the benefit of the local community. We then had a short tour of the facility and what was most memorable was the passionate tour guide who gave us a much informative, yet motivational speech. It felt as if we were inspired by all the good work that the center was doing. From hearing about helping the homeless, immigrants, older adults, and those who have dementia, we were all intrigued by the non-profit’s determination to help those in need. After the tour, we had the chance to play bingo with some senior citizens, which is always fun and exciting.
Overall, this site visit made me reflect on the importance of giving back to the community. I fondly remember the moments where I had the chance to do community service in high school and the great joy it brought me when those in need were cared for. In the future, I hope that I may be able to volunteer for this organization and grow in my empathy for people who are in difficult situations. Furthermore, it was heartwarming to see the many partnerships that the organization had with the city and other local entities. I hope that these services could be made available to more areas where there is a population in need.
