On Saturday, January 12th, we had a retreat at the Martin Johnson House. I had never been there before, and the view was gorgeous! We took a walk around the area, and we were asked to think critically about how this walk may be different for us if we suffered from any type of impairment including depth perception, stability, cognitive functions, etc. My maternal grandmother used to live with us and it was difficult for her to go places with us because as she aged, it became more and more common that she would fall and hurt herself. I thought about her when we did this walk and considered ways in which that walk could be more accommodating to elderly people by perhaps incorporating more railing to prevent falls. Throughout the course of the day, the class got to know each other a little better. I enjoyed practicing questions to ask our extraordinary person by asking similar questions to our classmates. I definitely feel more confident in my methods in deriving this information from my extraordinary person now. It was interesting to see which pictures people chose for this exercise and the importance that a single photo can hold to different people. I’m very intrigued to find out which pictures my dad will choose to share with me and the stories behind them. I loved our guest speaker that shared with us the memoir of her dear friend that has passed because it gave me a greater understanding of how important our memoirs of our EPs will be. We received copies of her book on how to write a memoir, and I will be reading that hopefully by next class so that I can pass it off to my buddy. I’m excited for class on Wednesday and to visit the Bayside Community Center!
