Today, we went to Bayside Community Center where the LCS group participated in ZUMBA with the seniors. Linda was a great instructor! It is clear to anyone and everyone that she does a great job of building a safe space and bringing the community together. The Zumba class was SO fun, and it seemed like the UCSD students had a harder time catching up than the older adults… The doctor in me was screaming when I saw how much effort they put in to age healthy; it brings me great joy to see that these older adults are regularly exercising all the while building social connections. I feel as if being able to go somewhere to freely dance and move around is something people my age may struggle with because of fear or judgement; but these older adults proved that it doesn’t matter what others think and they showed me confidence that I wish and strive to have.
The morning at Bayside made me think about what kind of exercises I would be able to do when I’m an older adult. I’m so blessed to not have any physical restrictions now, and I hope and pray that when I’m older, I’ll be able to go to a community center and freely dance my butt off at a Zumba class. I wish that we could’ve learned about the financial situations of those who were at the Zumba class; not to make their finances their identity, but rather to get an idea of what types of social exercise activities are available to the community and who has access to it.
The night before, my club, The Youth Movement Against Alzheimer’s, Undies for Oldies, Intergenerational Connections, and Origami Club from UCSD made Valentine’s goody bags for local San Diego Seniors. We decided to hand a couple out at Bayside and the adults loved it! Next week, we’ll be donating to JFS, which I am so excited for.
